WHAT WE DO
RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY: We conduct research for informed advocacy among the public and policy makers to create a conducive environment for the development of cooperatives. We research cooperative formation and development in Africa and around the world, documenting and highlighting initiatives that demonstrate the problem-solving achievements and potential of cooperative enterprise, in different conditions and locations. We disseminate this information widely in digital and print formats, exchanging ideas on how to replicate, adapt and transform cooperative efforts to suit specific locations and circumstances.
Through public diplomacy, publications, meetings and talks, Cooperation Africa raises awareness among the public and policy makers of the advantages and benefits of cooperatives. From individuals, households, and communities to local and national arenas of legislation and governance, we promote a social and regulatory environment conducive to setting up and growing cooperatives at local and national level.
FUNDRAISING AND FINANCING: We facilitate funding from institutions, agencies, foundations and individuals for cooperative formation and development that generates more secure, lucrative and sustainable livelihoods in rural and urban areas. We focus on Africa’s youth population, growing far faster than formal job creation. We focus on women, whose enterprise and potential are systematically undervalued and obscured. We emphasise financial literacy and cooperative business models in all areas of economic and creative activity.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: We connect individuals and groups to education, training, peer learning opportunities and technical support to set up and develop cooperatives. We promote experience sharing and facilitate mentoring, internships and partnerships with other cooperatives at local, national, regional and international level. We provide educational and practical programmes in cooperative history, legislation, formation and governance to develop the knowledge, skills and practices of cooperative business management and governance. We cover financing, operations, business planning, taxation and human resource management according to levels of experience and the particular needs of the specific cooperative, whether procurement, marketing, supplier, consumer or producer.
